SPECIFICATION FOR BURNT CLAY HOLLOW BRICKS USED FOR WALLS AND PARTITIONS

Reference

IS 3952-1988 – Specification for burnt clay hollow bricks for walls and partitions.

General Quality

o Bricks shall be free from cracks and flaws and nodules of free lime.

o Bricks shall have smooth rectangular faces with sharp corners

o Bricks shall be of uniform in colour and texture.

o Bricks shall be free from excessive winding or bowing.

Physical Requirements

Compressive Strength Minimum average compressive strength shall not be less than 3.5 N/mm2.

When tested for any individual brick, shall not fall below the minimum average compressive strength by more than 20%.

Water Absorption Shall not be more than 20% by weight
Efflorescence Shall have a rating of efflorescence not more than ‘Slight’

Types of Hollow Bricks

Types Face Type
Type A Bricks with both faces keyed for plastering or rendering
Type B Bricks with both faces smooth
Type C Bricks with one face keyed and one face smooth
